Amaxus-Driven English in Action Site Launched in Bangladesh

BBC JanalaIn early November, the BBC’s international charity, the World Service Trust launched a new website aimed at encouraging people to learn English in Bangladesh. The website is powered by Amaxus.

BBC Janala is packed with tools to encourage Bangladeshi people to learn English in a fun and engaging way. It includes quizzes, video and audio recordings, and blogs. Importantly, for users with slow or limited Internet connections, the site has a bandwidth switch, which reduces the page weight so that users are able to access the content quickly.

According to the BBC World Service Trust website this project is the first of its kind, providing “high quality English learning tools using mobile, television and internet to millions of people, many of whom live on less than £2 a day.”

“This project was an interesting challenge because we needed to build a site with a great deal of content using various media, whilst considering how to create something light weight that would be easily accessible to people using slower connections or a mobile phone to access the web,” said Stuart Arthur, Project Manager at Box UK, the company responsible for Amaxus. “There was a lot of research carried out into how people access the web in Bangladesh. The latest figure I’ve seen is that there are around 50.4 million mobile users in Bangladesh – this kind of information has obviously influenced the technical construction of the website.”

The launch of the site was a huge success. Recently, in an interview with the Financial Times Online, the BBC Janala Project Manager Sara Chamberlain said, “25,000 would have been a good response on the first day. Instead, we got hundreds of thousands of people.”
